Capt. Mike: Here's that evening's Captain's Challenge. Tap your answer.
A crew is flying the final segment of an RNP AR approach with RNP 0.10. The runway is not in sight. Under AC 700-024, what lateral deviation requires a missed approach?
The answer
1More than 0.10 NM (1 × RNP)
Explanation
AC 700-024 Appendix B 1.3.1(b)(14): cross-track deviation 'should be limited to ±½ x the navigation accuracy' for normal operations, brief deviations 'up to a maximum of 1 x the navigation accuracy' are tolerable, and 'pilots must execute a missed approach if the lateral deviation exceeds 1 × RNP or the vertical deviation exceeds 75 ft (22 m) below the vertical path, unless the flight crew members have the visual references in sight'. For RNP 0.10 the limit is 0.10 NM.
Memory tip: RNP AR: aim for ½ RNP, go around beyond 1 × RNP or 75 ft low.
