The holder of a student pilot permit may for the sole purpose of the holder’s own flight training act as PIC of an aircraft
Question 6.20 of TP 11919E, Department of Transport, Canada; reproduced with the Department's permission.
TC's answer
3by day only and authorized by a supervising flight instructor.
Explanation
CARs 401.19(1) lets a student pilot permit holder act as PIC if "(a) the flight is conducted for the purpose of the holder's flight training; (b) the flight is conducted in Canada; (c) the flight is conducted under day VFR; (d) the flight is conducted under the direction and supervision of a person qualified to provide training ...; and (e) no passenger is carried on board." So: day only, and under a supervising instructor.
Exam note. Under current CARs 401.19(2), a student enrolled in an integrated course may also fly as pilot-in-command at night; 'by day only' is the general rule TC expects on the exam.
Memory tip: Student permit: solo, by day, with instructor supervision, no passengers.
