Capt. Mike: Here's the question I asked that day. Tap your answer.
A pilot is 60 NM into a flight when weather forces a diversion to an alternate 45 NM away. Current groundspeed is 120 knots and fuel flow is 35 L/hr. How much fuel is required to reach the alternate (excluding reserve)?
The answer
213.1 L
Explanation
Time to the alternate = 45 NM ÷ 120 kt = 0.375 h (22.5 min), and fuel = 35 L/h × 0.375 h = 13.1 L. The 60 NM already flown has no bearing on the fuel needed from the diversion point. The reserve — 30 minutes at normal cruising speed for an aeroplane by day under CARs 602.88(3)(a)(i) — is added on top of this figure.
Memory tip: Fuel = Flow × Time. Time = Distance / GS. Always calculate in hours: 45/120 = 0.375 hrs. Then 35 × 0.375 = 13.1 L.
