In Canada, how does an AIRMET differ from a SIGMET?
The answer
4AIRMETs cover hazards not in the GFA that do not warrant a SIGMET
Explanation
TC AIM MET 5.1–5.2: an AIRMET advises of weather that may affect safety "and which were not already included in the graphic area forecast (GFA)", up to FL 240, and is issued when its criteria occur and "were not forecast in the graphic area forecast (GFA) and a significant meteorological information (SIGMET) message is not warranted". A SIGMET (MET 6.2) reports specified severe phenomena such as frequent or squall-line thunderstorms, severe turbulence, severe icing and volcanic ash.
