Capt. Mike: Here's the question I asked that day. Tap your answer.
What is the load factor in a level, coordinated turn at 30° of bank?
The answer
31.15 G
Explanation
In a level, coordinated turn the load factor equals 1 divided by the cosine of the bank angle, because the vertical component of lift must still balance the weight while the horizontal component turns the aircraft. cos 30° = 0.866, so the load factor is 1 ÷ 0.866 ≈ 1.15 G. The increase is small at shallow bank: 1.15 G at 30° and 1.41 G at 45°; only at 60° does it reach 2.0 G, where the stall speed has risen by about 41 percent.
Memory tip: 30° bank = 1.15G. Shallow turn, slight increase only.
